7th YEAR: CONDITIONAL SENTENCES.

MIXED CONDITIONALS

Past Condition / Present Result

The  one has a condition in the past and a present result. We use it to express that if something had been different in the past there would be a present result.
For example: if we hadn't missed our flight we'd be in Spain now.
The structure is: If + past perfect, would (could, might) + infinitive.

Present Condition / Past Result

The next one has a present condition and a past result. We use it to express that due to certain present conditions something already happened in the past.
For example: if I was more diligent, I would've finished my degree at university. The meaning is: I am not a diligent person and because of this present condition I have never finished my degree.
The structure is: if + past simple, would (could, might) have + past participle.

Teens 4., Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Dr. Henry Jekyll believes that there are two distinct sides to men - a good and an evil side. He believes that it´s possible to separate the man´s soul into two. He succeeded in his experiments with chemicals to accomplish this and transforms into Hyde to commit horrendous crimes. When he decides to stop taking the drug it was already too late since Mr Hyde had already done terrible things.

Henry Jekyll was a well respected member of London society. He was a medical doctorand scientist. He theorized that in each man there was a good side and an evil side which could be separated into two. In doing so, the evil side could be controlled and the good side could live without worry. In his experiments, he used himself as the subject to test his hypothesis. His evil side, Mr. Hyde, escaped into London, and terrorized many people and even killed a man. Jekyll, aware of Hyde's actions, decided to stop his experiments because of the suffering he had caused.
